Maths Thinkers thrives on metacognition, the practice of thinking about thinking or identifying one’s cognitive process (Lovett, 2008). It is a reflective skill that is necessary for problem solving, critical thinking and creativity. In Singapore, mathematical problem solving is central to learning mathematics at all levels. Metacognition, together with Attitudes, Skills, Processes and Concepts, forms the five inter-related components of the Mathematics Curriculum Framework.
At Maths Thinkers, we develop students with the ability to think mathematically. Because more contextual questions are being asked nowadays, it is crucial that students have the ability think critically in order to solve them. Thus, we cultivate students with the ability to keep asking themselves “How should I approach this question?”, “Which topics are involved?”, “Does my working and answers make sense?”, etc. When self-regulation skills are developed, together with a strong cognitive foundation, mathematics will become a less daunting subject for students.
With a macro view of the subject, Maths Thinkers students will appreciate the importance and relevance of learning mathematics. This is possible through our extensive experience in the industry, having taught at tertiary institutions for decades. A deeper understanding of how mathematics can be applied in real life, in turn, helps to spark the joy in learning.
